Ahhh! Memories of the Wild Days of years gone by in Quebec!

Meet Scott & Jim, two members of the Bammer snowmobile group that have been riding together for years out of Connecticut. They discovered an old trail sign from the eighties, on their way to St-Come. This sign showed the way to what they used to call "a gentleman's club", but of course as we all know, they were outlawed years ago. Now it is just a bitter sweet memory. You went in, got drunk, watched exotic dancers, then staggered out at 3 am only to discover your ride was missing. Ahhh - the good old days eh, when we were young and oh so foolish! The Bammer group of twenty four riders, spent this week in luxury at the Esterel, and rode 200 miles a day on fabulous smooth trails. They all head home today. Watch for the next Zen Talk podcast, where I interview a couple of the boys from Cheers at Esterel. zw

Hey Sledder? Are you ready to Die Too?
Snowmobile crashes caused by alcohol and excessive speed, and by just plain stupid behaviour.
Every year about this time, I use this photo to bring funerals to mind. This may be your near future if you ride drunk. 77 sledders have died in Wisconsin alone over the past two years, and countless others have been seriously, permanently injured with their lives changed forever, and that of their families. Snowmobiling is a safe sport if you stay sober, stay on the trails, also go prepared. Use your head cowboy. Safety first, your family needs you. Below are only SOME of the list of articles I received today! I get five or ten death announcements every day from all the mainline press. It makes me sick to my stomach, so, I have listed the stories of the poor stupid bastards that died yesterday. Harsh treatment of the dead you say? Hell no, they are were boozing it up, breaking the law by riding, putting themselves and others at danger, and in the final analysis, their selfish actions, have left their families in the lurch. Most of these deaths are not necessary. They were preventable. Now weep with me, for the new widows and orphans that were created yesterday alone. zw

Quebec snowmobile trail reports!
"Zen, How are you? I just got back from riding after the big storm in Shawinigan. I went up on Saturday after the storm, before the grooming started. We rode nothing but moguls all day long. Sunday the trails improved as the groomers got out and plowed the snow, they could not even pass without plowing first. Bernard was great as usual, he worked all day Saturday cleaning snow... I have included some pics and also made a stop at the Grand Prix Event on the river in Shawinigan (it runs all week through Sunday), people should go and check things out when they can" Pat Click here to enlarge

Feb 3 2008: Reporter/photographer BOB PETIT: St-Alphonse-de-Rodriguez Quebec - - What a beautiful day, and the trails were so full of 70's snowmobile models, that you would have thought you were back in a time machine. In spite of the big snow storm, over three hundred antique and classic snowmobile collectors showed up for the event. Half way through the trip, we were welcomed by our friends at the Auberge sur La Falaise, where we were offered delicious hot chocolate and coffee, which everyone appreciated. When we got back, there were fun drag races with the old sleds, which took us all back to the good old days. Bravo to the organizers from Lapointe Sports in Joliette, for this gem event. I was very impressed! To see all my 100 photos of the day, please see them on my web site. Thanks Zen! Your friend Bob Petit

Summit County Under Sheriff J. Don't punish good snowmobile Users
We live in the Midwest to enjoy the great outdoors, right? We live here to enjoy the snow whether that be skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling. We live right on a snowmobile trail and as a business owner and avid snowmobiler, I love the sound of sleds going by. Why? Because that means there are people out enjoying our weather AND they are spending money in an otherwise slow economy. These snowmobilers are buying gas, parts, apparel, a bite to eat at local restaurants, new sleds, etc. Instead of trying to limit and/or eliminate the sport, why don't we celebrate it!! Rescue search party for three snowmobilers is very Close
SUMMIT COUNTY, COLORADO – Rescue crews plan to work all night to find three missing snowmobilers and have sent text messages to two of them saying they are not giving up. Summit County Undersheriff J. Derek Crews may be within 100 yards of snowmobilers. Woodman says he believes rescue crews have been within 100 yards of two of the snowmobilers. They have narrowed the grid down to a small location, but have not been able to find the men. "We feel that we are very close," said Woodman. "Visibility is not a flat plane. It's not like looking down a city block or anything of that nature." Woodman says he believes one of the snowmobilers has been separated from the other two.

Esterel Quebec: Jan 27 2008 - -Like me, and like every other snowmobiler on the planet, Bob Petit fell hard for Wanda the Snowmobile Hostess at Esterel. He rode 350kms over the weekend in the Laurentians, and said the trails were amazing; "A real white carpet, all the way, except for a few crazy new trails in St.Alphonse. I rode a 600 Ski Doo with a long track, and never have I had such excellent control on a snowmobile in over 40 years of riding!" Bob spent the weekend at L'Esterel, and got the star treatment from Wanda and her crew. Speaking of St Alphonse, why not go next weekend to meet Bob, he'll be there along with over 600 antique and classic snowmobiles. Bob is our Quebec Ambassador of sledding. He would love to meet you all!

Sledders make mess of ski trails Snowmobilers asked to use own Trails
Owen Sound Ontario: Letter to the editor. Before Christmas, two snowmobilers blatantly ignored the "No snowmobiles please" sign and sped through the trails at the Massie ski hills, blowing snow from the hollows, leaving none to pack and banking sections of the trail which makes the passing of the groomer more difficult. We put it down to ignorance. Surely it wouldn't happen once they realized it was a groomed and maintained trail. It was ignorance! They did it again recently, this time after considerable work had been done on the trail. On the Saturday it took over two hours to pack the trail and on the Sunday the groomer was out for nearly three hours. Read the rest of this story here...

Five simple rules for ATV and Snowmobilers Saftey
Jan 25 2008; North Bay Ont: With the snowmobile season kicking into high-gear and the rising popularity of ATV use in winter months, Sudbury Regional Hospital and its Emergency and Trauma Programs is reminding riders the key to avoiding injury is prevention. Snowmobiling continues to be the leading cause of winter sport and recreational injuries, and ATV injuries have been rising in every season, the hospital said in a release. Among major snowmobile and ATV-related trauma cases hospital staff treat, the overwhelming majority of those injured are male, alcohol is a factor in over a quarter of all incidents, and of those injuries one-sixth are fatal. Jan 21 2008: Esterel Quebec - - Zen, I stayed at Esterel this weekend and paid a visit to Wanda. She did a great job catering to all of us snowmobilers and I must say that is was the most accommodating place for snowmobiling that I have stayed at in a while. I had a very nice evening, she had a singer and I even sang a song for the American boys up from Boston, they thought I was good. They did not like the fact that I drove Ski-Doo product, and were preaching about Yamaha, not even their own brands! The trails were 9 on 10, in the Laurentians. We did 500 km in a couple of days, we went north to Saint Donat and made a loop back through the park and on
Sunday we went to Rawdon and back up. Thanks Pat G.

Tree Huggers continue trying to close Trails in Quebec Parks
Avid snowmobiler Daniel Breton says he has no lessons to learn about nature from environmental groups who last week called for snow-mobiles to be banished from provincial parks by 2009. Breton is concerned that the Quebec government is about to crack down hard on his favourite sport, pushing snow- mobilers out of places like Oka Park and Mont Tremblant. He says some of the park trails are key connectors in Quebec's 33,500-kilometre network of marked snowmobile trails, and moving them out of the parks is not a simple exercise. Snowmobile pro returns to stomping Grounds

Jan 21 2008 - - WEST YELLOWSTONE - This small town in southwestern Montana is special for Tucker Hibbert. It was the first place he strapped on a helmet and tightened up the gloves for a snowmobile race. Tucker Hibbert catches air while competing in a heat at the West Yellowstone Jack Links Snocross nationals, Saturday. Hibbert started his racing career in West Yellowstone at the age of 9. That was when he was 9 years old, and to say a lot has happened to the Driggs, Idaho, native since then would be an understatement.

Model T snowmobile attatchment.
Jan 19 2008 - - Cokato Minnesota: Below zero, time to break out the 'ol snowmobile. In Cokato snowmobile enthusiasts take a spin, back in time. With a slight breeze on a Saturday morning. It feels a little bit cooler than the three below reading on the first national bank sign. But the bitter cold is not enough to keep the old Ford from turning over. "they were used mainly by the mailman, but also when the doctor couldn't get out, it would carry the doctor too, it was just a fun vehicle to have," said snowmobile enthusiast Susan Keskey. One of the refurbished Model-T's was Cokato postmaster Carl Peikert's. He drove it before mail carriers used sidewalks or streets were plowed on a regular basis. Besides the snowmobile, the old dairy truck is the only vehicle that helped clear the roads. The Ford Model T's with the skis would follow behind.

Two Snowmobiles Through The Ice
Jan 19 2008: Sudbury Ontario - - Snowmobilers yet again…being warned to stay off the ice. Greater Sudbury Police are investigating after a report earlier this afternoon about two snowmobiles going through the ice on Lake Wahnapitae. Police remind the public that the trails are closed and the lakes simply aren’t safe. In this case…both operators got out safely and made their way to the Sportsman Lodge on Kukagami Lake Road. Police are still looking for the identity of the two…but they believe they are Americans. It’s not known if charges will be laid.

Snowmobile Safety Week in New York State
"Now that the snowmobiling season has started here in New York, the safety committee of NYSSA would like each club to remember a few things. NYSSA belongs to a program called Safe Riders! You make snowmobiling Safe, which is a safety campaign that is trying to bring safe snowmobiling practices, training and enforcement to a new level.

Along with the snowmobile safety course each year we have International Snowmobile Safety Week. This year safety week is January 13-19, 2008. NYSSA is asking each club to take some time during this week to remind your members about snowmobile safety. Be it at a meeting, a hot dog roast out on the trail, a letter to the local newspaper that explains snowmobile safety or anything else that the club can come up with. If you do have some type of safety awarness program, we would also like to have some pictures of safety related programs that you do during the week. Just send them to the NYSSA office via email or regular mail. Please put them in C/O safety committee.

Snowmobiling accidents and fatalities have continued to decline over the past several years. The Safe Riders! Campaign highlights key issues of importance for snowmobile safety. The position statements are concise and easy to understand. They include:

1. Snowmobiling and Alcohol don't mix - don't drink and ride
2. When night riding slow down - expect the unexpected
3. Know before you go - always check local ice conditions
4. Cross all roads with care - don't become road-kill
5. One is the loneliest number - never ride alone
6. Know the risks and be prepared - make every trip a round trip
7. Ride smart ride right - stay in control
8. Smart Riders are Safe Riders - always take snowmobile safety training

For more information on snowmobile safety, posters, DVD’s on safety, public service announcements and many more. Please visit www.snowmobile.org . Respectfully,
NYSSA Safety Committee

Please get this out to all your members
Due to the recent number of fatalities already this season, snowmobilers need to remember that their life and others depend on everyone’s actions.
